0924Y00F05prime09Y00S0Y00C3NOne Feeder song (and no Radish)
0825Y00F11microknight08Y00C1N
0801NJas and I went to see the good bands, while everyone else went to see the
0801Nshit ones. We missed Radish, and all but one Feeder song, which was not the
0801Nbst start to the day. Nevertheless, Feeder were lively ebough to raise my
0801Nearly estimations of them as a sub-pumpkins outfit.

0919Y00F05prime09Y00C3NDog Eat Dog
0830Y00F11microknight08Y00J0Y00C1N
0801NWhat I needed was a pick-me-up. I had missed Radish, with the 15 year old
0801Nfrontman (frontchild?) And a great song called Little Pink Stars. Dog Eat Dog
0801Nput me in a great mood. Who's the King? was breathtaking, as was every
0801Nnumber they did. Isms was the pick of the bunch, a real festival song that
0801Nexpressed the open, friendly atmosphere of the arena. Dog Eat Dog kicked ass,
0801Nand became everyone's favourite band for forty-five minutes. A triumphant
0801Nreturn for a band who have really been in limbo since No Fronts. They deserve
0801Nall the success they get. Truly brilliant. This is what Ska should be like.
0801NIf you want happy, vibrant music, nobody does it better that Dog Eat Dog.

0919Y00F05prime09Y00C3NDescendents
0820Y00F11microknight08N
0806Y00C1NDreadful sound ruined what would have been a bog-standard punk set. It was
0801Ncruel to stick them out in the open, as we all know this kind of anarchic
0801Nmusic works better in a closed off club. I for one felt sorry for them.

0919Y00F05prime09Y00C3N3 Colours Red
0825Y00F11microknight08Y00C1N
0801NI had already heard their songs'. Nuclear Holiday, the most predictable,
0801Nheartless, pathetic, juvenile, talentless bag of aural shit ever to emerge
0801Nfrom this county. I knew that on record they sucked like an
0801Nindustrial-strength plunger, but this appaling set proved that they even suck
0801Nmore than a nymphomaniac with a lollypop. They really are crap.
0801N"This is the heaviest riff you'll hear all weekend." Bollocks. Vocalist Pete
0801NVuckovic is a wanker. The tiny crowd that this shit pop group attracted did
0801Nnot bounce up and down. Each song was greeted by a quiet, subdued applause.
0801NIt was embarrasingly bad. Imagine the Wildhearts if they wrote teeny-bop
0801Nballads aimed at 8-year old girls. Boyzone in leathers? Hardly. Boyzone write
0801Nbetter songs.

0919Y00F05prime09Y00C3NDinosaur Jr
0825Y00F11microknight08Y00C1N
0801NThis was good, but seemed better after the shit heap of 3 Colours Red.
0801NMusically proficient, and emotionally charged, Dinosaur Jr fall down on two
0801Ncounts. They are slow, and they are monotonous. It is a shame, bacause they
0801Nare also quite good. Not memorable, but benefit from following the dreadful
0801N3CR.
0806Y00C3N
0914Y00F05prime09NTerrorvision
0825Y00F11microknight08Y00C1N
0801NMetallica had requested that Marilyn Manson open for them, so Terrorvision
0801Nwere placed in an earlier slot. They played a new song, "Babyface", the
0801Nlyrics of which are universally familiar, but the song was still very, very
0801Ncool. Despite missing "Hide the Dead Girl" (Doh!) And a couple of other
0801Nopening songs, I saw most of the set and they were great. Personally, I don't
0801Nlike their newest album as much as "How to make friends and influence
0801Npeople", but in a live atmosphere, every song was rousing and brilliant.
0801NOblivion swept across the crowd like an infectious diisease, and "Didn't
0801Nbleed red" was amazing, a deep and angst-ridden song that is one of the
0801Nband's best. Oh, and "Alice, What's the Matter?" is fucking incredibe on
0801Nrecord, and ten times as good live. It was a shame they were pushed into an
0801Nearlier slot, but I think they benefited from the sunlight to provide one of
0801Nthe highlights of a great festival. Ten out of ten to the tenth power.

0801N
0919Y00F05prime09Y00C3NMidget
0825Y00F11microknight08Y00C1N
0801NMidget were excellent. They played pop music, but gave it a gorgeous and
0801Nexuberant energy which 99% of such bands lack. The highlights included a man
0801Ndressed as a giant pink jellybean, who threw packets of sweets into the crowd
0801Nduring "Welcome home Jellybean, and a cover of the Monkees' "Day Dream
0801NBeliever", which was one of the best songs of the festival, and was the
0801Nperfect ending to a most triumphant set. Midget are fantastic.

0825Y00F11microknight08Y00C1N
0801NOkay, so Bush do not make consistently good albums. We expected them to be as
0801Nall the reviews have stated, quite disappointing live. However, I was
0801Nsurprised. Gavin Rossdale moshes like a bastard, whilst simultaneously
0801Nplaying guitar and singing. Where (Shepherd's) Bush fall down usually, is in
0801Ntheir arty-farty, overdone music. Twingy-twangy guitars and over produced
0801Nfret-wanking spoils their music. Today, they thrash it out like mad people
0801Nhappy to be out of the asylum. The careful guitar riffing is gone, and
0801NRossdale attacks his guitar visciously, holding the crowds attention. He
0801Nisn't a bimbo after all. All right, so he isn't Kurt Cobain either. The
0801Nreal problem with Bush is their lack of presence. Gavin Rossdale is
0801Nexcellent, but Cobain had Novoselic and Grohl, who were also mad as hatters.
0801NRossdale is surrounded by motionless and limb bystanders such as Nigel
0801NPulsford. The other three members lack passion and it is only Rossdale's
0801Nscreeching and moshing that holds our attention, otherwise, we could have
0801Njust been listeining to the radio. But that last bit was cruel. Rossdale
0801Ndismounts to greet the audience, speaks a few words in some weird language
0801N(it could be American), and generally puts on a good show. It is a pity that
0801Nthe other three guys couldn't have done the same.
0801N
0801N
0919Y00F05prime09Y00C3NMarilyn Manson (YES! MARILYN MANSON!)
0825Y00F11microknight08Y00C1N
0801NMazza is at Reading. It is official. The AntiChrist Superstar is now a
0801Nsuperstar, period. Bush exit stage right... and out come the Goths.
0801NIt is a beautiful sight. Soon, the space around the stage is packed full of
0801Npale people in Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails and Korn T-shirts, and some
0801Nwear the obligatory face paint. One girlfaints, and has to be ushered out.
0801NThen the fun starts. The band as usual, take their time entering the
0801Nlimelight, but once their they make Reading their own. "Everything up to this
0801Nvery fuckinh moment," growls Manson "has been a load of soft ass bullshit."
0801NCue the rapturous "Angel with the Scabbed Wings." The whole crowd, not just
0801Nthe mosh pit, starts going wild. Non-Manson fans who are unfamiliar with
0801Npassionate music are puzzled and suprised, expecting to be safely away from
0801Nflailing limbs and bouncing heads. Marilyn Manson had the biggest mosh pit at
0801Nthis wonderful festival. Manson himself revels in the attention. For forty
0801Nfive minutes he is a demagogue and we hang on his every word. He is a
0801Nmagnificent frontman with more energy than a dozen Terrorvisions, smashing
0801Nthe mic against his chest during "Get your Gun" and generally making a scene.
0801NNew Goth has invaded the mainstream. Twiggy Ramirez is a brilliant
0801Nguitarist, and he effortlessly plays his instrument to ten times the
0801Nproficiency of Noel bleedin' Gallagher, bashing his crotch against the back
0801Nof his bass in tune with Ginger Fish's powerful drumming. Keyboardist Madonna
0801NWayne Gacy pogos center stage, whilst guitarist Zim-Zum (Michael from
0801NChicago) moshes almost as much as Manson himself, relishing the feeling of
0801Nbeing on the main stage, opening for the world's biggest rock band. Tonight,
0801Nwe love them, and tonight, they pay us back a thousand-fold. "How does it
0801Nfeel to be one of the beautiful people?" We know what comes next. "The
0801NBeautiful People" is four minutes of beauty, taking the best parts of heaven
0801Nand hell, mixing them up and vomiting them out. Now's the time to
0801Ndiscriminate, hate every motherfucker that's in your way! Everyone in black
0801Nknows the words. NIN's Trent Reznor has unleashed a monster. Marilyn Manson
0801Nhave now won the battle against narrow minded indie kid wankers, and I was
0801Nthere to see it. If you were watching Audioweb instead, or sitting in your
0801Ntent (Dave! Kev! This means you!) Then you missed history in the making. A
0801Npassionate, powerful and monstrous performance.
0801N
0801N
0919Y00F05prime09Y00C3NMETALLICA
0825Y00F11microknight08Y00C1N
0801NThe biggest rock band on the planet (forget shitty old Bon-ballad-Jovi).
0801NMetalica even make Aerosmith look crap. I was not a fan before this gig, but
0801NI knew that I had to see them live. It is just something everyone has to do.
0801NEven though I hate the bag of total shite that goes by the name of 'The
0801NVerve', I felt sorry for them. On at the same time as Metallica. I am told
0801Nthat loads of people went to see the wanky indie group, but the Melody Maker
0801Nstage is tiny compared to the space allowed for the main stage, so I just say
0801Nbollocks.' I cannot be bothered arguing with Verve fans. There is no getting
0801Nthrough to them. It is a pity Verve doesn't rhyme with shite, because if it
0801Ndid, I could easily make up a poem about them. But I digress.
0801N
0801NSo, while the Verve whine and moan through their set, we watch and wait while
0801Nthe roadie tests the microphone. "Yeah. Yeah. Oh yeah. Yeah." He drones on
0801Nand on, and we start getting restless. When the band takes the stage, we
0801Ngreet them with applause and hollering. "Sad but True" is magnificent, as
0801Nare all of the songs they play tonight. "One" is easily overshadowed by the
0801Nanthem "Enter Sandman", which is so wonderful, the emotion in the crowd was
0801Ntangible. They are very tight and focused tonight, and they prove, beyond a
0801Nshadow of a doubt, that they are the best band in the world (even though they
0801Nare not my favourite band, I must admit this). The sheer awesome presence of
0801Nthe band crushes the painful memory of how dull Oasis really are.
0801N
0801NThe only reason American rock is ignored over here is because it pisses on
0801Nour pop and indie bollocks so much, that the UK music industry would grind to
0801Na halt if people heard Metallica, Nine Inch Nails, Stone temple Pilots, Guns
0801N'n' Roses, Alice in Chains and Faith no More 24 hours every day. Metallica
0801Nrepresent the one thing that is good about the US. They make great music.
0801N"You are Reading. We are Metallica, and we play heavy fuckin' music."
0801N
0801NThe Verve? Bollocks to that. Metallica made this festival their own. The last
0801Nact, on the last day, on the main stage. This is as high on the bill as you
0801Ncan get, and Metallica rise to the occasion with ease and flair. Musically,
0801Nthey are very highly skilled. Kirk Hammet and Jason Newstead are obviously
0801Nenjoying themselves, as is drummer and band spokesman Lars 'blah blah'
0801NUlrich. However, it is the stationary James Hetfield who hogs the limelight.
0801NHis powerful, growling voice makes us realise just how bad Liam Gallagher,
0801Nthat wanker from Cast, and about every other Indie frontman really are at
0801Nsinging. The best song tonight is "Anywhere I may Roam", which I had
0801Npreviously never heard. The new stuff they played was good, but this song
0801Njust stuck in my head. The opening riff is just so good, and the song
0801Nthunders along like a giant rock and roll express train. If you want to see
0801Nthe best band in the world, look no further. Metallica are it.
0801N
0801N
3224Y00F05basic32Y00C6Y04C7NThe Verve
0825Y00F11microknight08Y00C1N
0801NI expected them to be really bad, but actually they were excellent. Powerful,
0801Nemotional tunes that pluck at the strings of your heart, and make you fall in
0801Nlove with UK indie music all over again...
0801NHa! Fooled you! Do you really think I went to see the Verve? Jesus Christ you
0801Nmust think I am a complete dullard. The Verve are so shit, it is
0801Nunbelievable. I would not be seen dead at a verve gig, and I resent you
0801Nutterly for thinking otherwise. They are a total bag of old man's arse.
